Angus Brown – Mania|
Gluttony – The Pig Pen, Sun Feb 17\
By day he’s a performer in children’s educational theatre with diabolical daydreams, but by night he’s a comedian regaling audiences with tales of childhood bullying and casthma (cat asthma). Angus Brown is a man who despises bad grammar but is partial to some R Kelly Ignition. He is a man with a 007 tattoo and a deep passion for writing erotic Murder, She Wrote fan fiction. He is scared of ghosts, yells at pineapples for being inferior and has an estranged quasi-racist father.
If this all sounds like something you want to take your grandkid to see, ask yourself if you’d be comfortable having them hear the end result of pleasuring oneself with a feline in the room. With the reassuring vocal skills of a Play School presenter, Angus Brown is a witty provocateur who just skims the surface when it comes to exploring his brain forest.
Final Word: Erotic.

Angus Brown - Mania continues at Gluttony – The Pig Pen until Fri Mar 1.

Angus Brown in What My Mum Taught Me at Felix Bar until April 22

WHEN comedians tell stories about their life you often suspect they are taking quite a bit of comedic licence to garner laughs.

But with Angus Brown you get the feeling he is speaking from the heart when he recounts amusing tales of being raised by an unconventional single mum.

The show, peppered liberally with swear words, shares many of his mother’s words of wisdom and tips on important life skills such as stealing pot glasses.

Audience members are given amusing storybook guides, complete with a chime to prompt page turning, to help them follow Brown’s eccentric life story.

His mother’s sense of humour and zest for life have provided plenty of material - from being tackled by a cousin in a panda suit during Christmas lunch to learning to fly a plane at seven.

Brown, who mentions his day job in educational theatre during the show, is a passionate and energetic performer who will leave you with a smile on your face and a new-found appreciation for your mum.

THE PUN.Angus Brown – What My Mum Taught Me5 APRIL 2012 BARBARA WELTON

Making his mother proud at St Kilda’s Felix Bar on Fitzroy Street, Angus Brown invites you to come with him on the story of his life so far, and hear about the nine core lessons his awesome mum has taught him along the way.

And yes, his mum really is awesome: single mother, ninja, truth sayer, no-shit-taker.  Mum Brown’s wisdom wends through the show on such topics as philosophy, masturbation, babies, theft and the environment.  The obvious love and admiration, the fact that Brown and his mum are good buddies, flows through every tale and is as charming as it is funny.

The atmosphere of the show is engaging and playful and the audience gets to absorb some of Brown’s life lessons alongside him.  How best to steal beer glasses, why swearing doesn’t matter in the greater scheme of things, and why the big religions fall so short in the awesome stakes.

Brown is a natural story teller and enjoys his work so thoroughly that he makes the time to thank us, the audience, for providing opportunity to himself and other comedians, for supporting the art form of live comedy.  Stemming from that, Brown’s one-man show becomes more than a simple stand-up act or a string of funny stories.  It becomes a platform for exploring life’s mysteries and airing of grievances, a sharp jab of comedy as therapy, all wrapped up in a beautiful, life affirming message regarding self-truth and realizing dreams.

Go on – take your Mum!
